Ste-Foy Bridges & Dams
• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide to Bridges & Dams in Ste-Foy, QC, Quebec.
Completed in 1970, Pont Pierre-Laporte is Canada's longest suspension bridge and is located within sight of historic Pont Quebec. The bridge is used by over 90,000 vehicles daily.
The central, suspended span of this cantilever bridge is 549 m (1801 ft) in length between the two main pillars, making it the longest cantilever bridge in the world. During construction, this span collapsed twice (1907 and 1916), but the bridge was finally opened to railway traffic in 1917. It was not until 1929 that motorists began using it. In addition to being a National Historic Site, the bridge has been listed as an international historic monument to civil engineering science.
